Jeff Johnston, CSP, ARM, ALCM
Jeff Johnston, Director of Risk Control Services, joined BRS with over 15 years of safety and risk control experience. During his career with BRS, he has provided safety and risk management consultative services and training to various public and private clients, including schools, cities, counties, and special districts. Mr. Johnston’s prior experience includes several years of general safety consulting in the insurance industry and over eight years of risk management consulting for a pool of 300 public water agencies. He was instrumental in developing and customizing targeted safety programs to control general liability, property, and workers' compensation exposures and also designed and presented numerous regional and statewide training sessions to address those exposures. Mr. Johnston is a member, past Chapter President, and past Board Delegate of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He has a Bachelor of Science from California State University, Sacramento, and is a Certified Safety Professional, an Associate in Loss Control Management, and an Associate in Risk Management.
Carol M. Barake, MS, CIH
Carol M. Barake is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with 30 years of experience providing environmental, health, and safety consulting services to public sector clients that include counties, cities, and water and wastewater treatment agencies. Her project management experience includes health and safety program development and audits, the development of strategic plans and the facilitation of client teams implementing health and safety program elements. Ms. Barake is experienced in the design and delivery of health and safety training programs, including 10 years as an instructor in the UC Davis Health & Safety Extension Program and the UC Davis Campus Professional Development Series. Her previous positions include manager of environmental, health and safety services for an environmental consulting firm and industrial hygiene consultant and service manager in the insurance industry. Ms. Barake is an active member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.
Dave Beal, ARM-P
Dave Beal is a Risk Control Consultant with over 12 years experience in safety, risk control, and food safety. Prior to joining BRS, Mr. Beal was a regional safety specialist and HACCP systems analyst for Raley’s Superstores, a northern California chain of supermarkets with over 130 locations. Mr. Beal provides a wide range of safety and risk control services to BRS clients; he specializes in forklift and aerial lift training, office ergonomics, and driver safety training. His focus is to assist clients in developing sustainable safety management systems. Mr. Beal has obtained the designation of Associate in Risk Management for Public Entities and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Enriqueta Castro, CSP
Enriqueta Castro is a Risk Control Manager with 20 years experience in safety and risk control. Prior to joining BRS, she was a senior loss control consultant for Zurich NA Insurance and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Ms. Castro provides a wide range of safety and risk management consultative services to BRS clients that include municipalities, schools, housing authorities, and fire districts. Ms. Castro is a Certified Safety Professional with a Bachelor of Science in business management and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Lee Sorenson, ARM-P
Lee Sorenson is a Risk Control Manager who joined BRS in January 2005 after a 12-year career as a regional safety specialist with Raley’s Inc. Mr. Sorenson is currently managing risk control services for the California Transit Insurance Pool and is a safety consultant for the County of Sonoma - Department of Transportation & Public Works. He holds an Associate in Risk Management for Public Entities from the Insurance institute of America. In addition, Mr. Sorenson has certificates in Workplace Health & Safety Management & Training (U.C. Davis), Master Instructor for Powered Industrial Trucks (Ives Training & Compliance), Transit Safety & Security (US Department of Transportation) and Department of Homeland Security – FEMA certifications in Incident Command Systems, Continuity of Operations & National Incident Management Systems. Mr. Sorenson uses his professional affiliation in the American Society of Engineers and the America Public Transit Association for continuing education.
Mary Beth O'Connell, RN, COHN-S, ARM-P
Mary Beth O'Connell’s 30 plus years of occupational health and safety experience encompasses 10 years in the manufacturing sector as an occupational and environmental health nurse and over 25 years as a risk control and safety and health consultant working primarily with public entities. As a Risk Control Manager for BRS, she is responsible for account management. She provides a variety of consulting services to assist clients in assessing, preventing, and controlling their risks. Trained as a registered nurse, Ms. O’Connell continued her education and attained a degree in health services administration from St. Mary’s College of California, became a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist, and achieved the designation of Associate in Risk Management for Public Entities. In 2010, she was recognized as the Safety Professional of the Year for the Public Sector Practice Specialty of the American Society of Safety Engineers. She is a professional member of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses and the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Terrie S. Norris, CSP, ARM, CPSI
Terrie S. Norris is Risk Control Manager for BRS in our Long Beach office. Ms. Norris has more than 20 years experience in safety, health, and environmental management in recycled paper, rubber and plastics, and metal forming industries and loss control consultation. Currently, she provides risk management services, such as audits, program development, and training for industrial and public entities. As a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers since 1987, she is currently serving as the Society’s President-elect and will take office as the Society’s President in June of 2011. Her honors include Manager of the Year (Poms & Associates), American Society of Safety Engineers Orange County Chapter and Region One Safety Professional of the Year, and American Society of Safety Engineers Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.
Tom Kline, ARM, CPSI
Before joining BRS, Tom Kline led the safety, health, emergency response, and fire prevention efforts of large private sector employers for 18 years. For the last 10 years, he has provided safety and risk management consulting services to public entities to reduce their employee claim frequency and lower overall claim costs. Mr. Kline has a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from State University of New York at Binghamton. He holds an Associate in Risk Management and is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector. Additionally, Mr. Kline is a member of the Sacramento Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and is currently President-elect of the chapter.
Trevor Earle, CPSI
As a Risk Control Consultant, Trevor Earle has provided private and public sector clients with creative risk control services by developing and formulating policies, procedures, programs, and custom communication materials. He applies expertise in risk control to a broad range of private and public sector clients, with an emphasis on educational settings. Mr. Earle has an undergraduate degree in biology and a master’s degree in public administration. He also has professional affiliations with the American Society of Safety Engineers and the California Society of Safety and Security Professionals.
