The Department of Justice published the revised final regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for Title II (State and local government services) and Title III (public accommodations and commercial facilities) on September 15, 2010, in the Federal Register. These requirements, or rules, clarify and refine issues that have arisen over the past 20 years and contain new, and updated, requirements, including the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design (“2010 Standards”).
The March 15, 2012, compliance date for complying with the 2010 standards for Construction and Alterations, Program Accessibility, and Accessible Design (barrier removal) is just around the corner. Some of the changes we will discuss include accessible routes, curb ramps, detention and correctional facilities, recreation facilities, swimming pools, playground areas, and public facilities. We will also discuss elements of Title III, including service animals and wheelchairs and other similar motorized devices.
